Livelihood

Climate resilient agriculture, native seeds and allied livelihoods for smallholder and women farmers.

Livelihoods that can withstand a changing climate

Large parts of Maharashtra are semi-arid and routinely face uncertain rainfall — sometimes too little, sometimes too much, floods one year and drought the next. Smallholder farmers, single women farmers and landless families feel these shocks first, in their crops, livestock and incomes.

DST promotes the understanding of climate resilient agriculture and allied livelihood activities amongst small NGOs and helps them carry this knowledge to their local farmers. With partners such as Shramik Janata Vikas Sanstha in Jawali (Satara), DST runs farmers’ workshops on traditional and organic farming, distributes native seeds, and has long worked with women’s Self Help Groups and their federations on financial planning and literacy.

Focus areas

  • Climate resilient, traditional and organic farming practices.
  • Access to native, nutritious seed varieties for smallholder and single women farmers.
  • Soil and water conservation, and long-term drought mitigation.
  • Strengthening Self Help Groups and federations, including financial planning and literacy.
  • Linking communities with government schemes and relief measures.
